11-Year-Old Girl Dies at Hospital, Becoming 6th Sibling to Die After Indiana House Fire

A sixth child has died after amassive firetore through an Indiana home earlier this month.

Five other children were killed in the fire that began at 222 North LaPorte Avenue in South Bend “in the early evening,” according to a previous news release fromthe fire department.

The department has since identified the victims as three boys — Demetris Smith, 10, Deontay Smith, 5, and D’Angelo Smith, 4 — and two girls, Davida Smith, 9 and Faith Smith, 17 months.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The father sustained minor injuries the night of the fire, per the SBFD. Two firefighters were also injured: one was burned while the other fell through a hole in the second floor and landed on the first floor.

The owner of WJM Property Management told the newspaper that the repairs had been made to the building. The management company did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the SBFD said.

The department also said it is “committed to providing support to these families during this difficult time and is working closely with local & State authorities to investigate the cause of the fire.”
