88-Year-Old Man Drowns After ATV Driven by Grandson Breaks Through Icy Lake: 'Pray for the Family'

Floyd Hardison drowned after he went ice fishing with his son and two grandsons on Spring River Lake in Hancock County, according to theNew York Post,thePortland Press HeraldandNBC affiliate WCSH.

The adult grandson, who was driving, managed to pull himself out as the vehicle broke through about 400 feet from shore, per the reports. Sadly, Harrison was not able to do the same.

Hardison’s body was recovered around 8:25 p.m. in 10-foot-deep water at the bottom of the lake, according to the reports.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for comment.

The Sullivan Fire Department, one of the agencies that responded to the scene, offered their condolences to Harrison’s familyin a Facebook post.

“Please pray for the family of the individual and the crews on the rescue,” their statement read. “It’s a hard job and I want to thank my crew as well as the others for their dedication to the public in their times of need.”

The agency also warned visitors to “be careful” while out on the ice.

“Things can go bad in a hurry,” the department said. “There isn’t as much ice as people may think.”
