Varietyreportsthat Oscar winnerEmma Thompsonis set to join fellow Oscar winner Stone in Disney’sCruella. The live-action character origin story is based on101 Dalmatianvillain Cruella de Vil, withI, Tonyadirector Craig Gillespie set to helm.
While the movie’s plot has been kept under-wraps, Stone, who has been attached to the project since 2016, will play the titular villain. Thompson’s character has yet to be revealed.
The movie, which Disney recently announced will hit theaters Dec. 23, 2020, is the latest villain-focused Disney retelling. The studio previously found huge success with 2014’sMaleficentstarringAngelina Jolie, who reprised the role for this fall’sMaleficent: Mistress of Evilsequel.

Stone would be the second actress to take on the role for the big screen after Glenn Close played the iconic villain in the 1996101 Dalmatiansadaptation and its 2000 sequel102 Dalmatians.
Thompson previously collaborated with Disney on another live-action retelling — 2017’sBeauty and the Beast, where she played Mrs. Potts. She also starred as real-lifeMary Poppinsauthor P.L. Travers in Disney’s 2013 movieSaving Mr. Banksalongside Tom Hanks.
The actress is next starring in two movie hitting theaters the same day. She reprises her role as Agent M inMen in Black: Internationaland costars with Mindy Kaling onLate Night, both out on June 7.
