Active shooter drills may be commonplace in schools across the country, but many experts have raised concern that the simulationscan be traumatic.
Meant as a way to prepare students in therare eventof a school shooting, the drills can be very realistic.
“What more schools are starting to do is to actually simulate what an active shooter situation would be like, which means they’re having someone dress up pretending to be the active shooter,” Melissa Reeves, a professor at Winthrop University and the former president of the National Association of School Psychologists, recently toldNPR.

Ai-jen Poo has dedicated her adult life to helping improve the lives of domestic workers in the United States through her work at theNational Domestic Workers Alliance, of which she is the co-founder and executive director.
Poo, 47, is passionate about the plight of the workers, many of whom are immigrants and women of color. Raised in an intergenerational Taiwanese-American family, her nurse grandmother helped raise her as her parents pursued careers in the medical field.

When Crystal Echo Hawk was in the third grade, she recalls watching a Bugs Bunny cartoon that featured a Native American stereotype.
“He has a bright red, huge nose, not wearing a shirt and he’s wearing a banner that said, ‘Vanishing American,'” she recalls. “It made me feel really bad. It really stuck with me.”
Echo Hawk, now 49, grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and attended a mostly white school where she was teased about her name and asked to perform the rain dance.

An activist group is outraged after a dolphin hunt in the Faroe Islands slaughtered more animals than expected, killing over 1,400 dolphins in the North Atlantic.
On Sunday, Sea Shepherd Global, a marine conservation nonprofit organization, reported that hunters in speed boats guided apod of 1,428 white-sided dolphinsfor miles until they reached shallow waters. The hunters killed the marine mammals at a beach in the Danish Faroe Islands.

What was your journey to having the family life you have today?I met my husband eight years ago. We’ll be married for five years this year. When we started dating, we both knew we wanted to have children, and now we have two little boys.
He wouldn’t stop or leave so I asked for help from employees and the patrons around me, and they did the best they could under the circumstances.
