We have apologized to Dr. Jackson and Dr. Uwandu for our insufficient response. We are currently working with them to make this right, and we are reviewing every aspect of this case from the reports of the host’s disturbing behavior to our response.

The new initiative, which the company says will help people in need around the world, will kick off with a $5 million personal donation from co-founder Joe Gebbia. The 39-year-old recently contributed $25 million totwo San Francisco charitiesworking to end homelessness. The Refugee Fund is part ofAirbnb.

Richardson Police Department “I confronted him and he denied everything. I kicked him out and he had the audacity to tell me to refund him. I found out an hour later that he stole cash (around $500) and immediately contacted Airbnb,” Khawaja continued, adding that she called the police to report the incident, but they “had trouble locating his ‘clean record’ and that meant they didn’t take me seriously.

Airbnb Makes Accommodations Free to People Fleeing Hurricane Florence and Emergency Workers

The home-sharing and travel company is offering free lodging in numerous metropolitan areas across North Carolina (Charlotte and Greensboro), South Carolina (Columbia, Greenville and Spartanburg), Georgia (Atlanta and Augusta) and Virginia (Charlottesville), through itsOpen Homes Program. “In the event of major emergencies like this one, Airbnb’s Disaster Response Program helps local residents who have been displaced—as well asemergency relief workersand volunteers who are coming in to assist—find temporary accommodations with local Airbnb hosts who are opening their homes free of charge,” a representative for the company tells PEOPLE.

Airbnb Offers Free Housing and 'a Safe Place to Rest' for Afghan Refugees

The home rental company announced Tuesday that it will provide free temporary accommodations to the 20,000 refugees who have fled Afghanistan in the past month amidst theTaliban takeover,The Washington Postreported. “In this past week, it has become abundantly clear that the displacement and resettlement of Afghan refugees here in the United States and elsewhere is a significant humanitarian crisis – and in the face of this need, our community is ready to once again step up,” Airbnb said in astatement.
