America's Oldest Person, Alelia Murphy, Dies After Celebrating 114th Birthday in July

Alelia Murphy, the oldest person in the United States, has died. She was 114. “It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Mrs. Alelia Murphy,” healthcare union 1199SEIU Caregivers announced on Wednesday. Murphy was born in 1905 in North Carolina, and moved to Harlem in 1926. “Our deepest condolences are with Mrs. Murphy’s daughter, 1199SEIU Montefiore retiree Rose Green, and with the rest of their family during this difficult time,” the statement added.

She was 115.The Nebraska woman’s nephew confirmed the news toCNN, and said she died Monday.“She passed away peacefully in Omaha at an assisted living facility,” Robert Sorenson, 94, told the outlet.Sutcliffe, who was born in 1906, became theoldest living Americanthis spring after a 115-year-old woman from North Carolina died in April. At the time, theGerontology Research Groupalso said that Sutcliffe was the seventh oldest living person in the world.

American Accents Are Perceived to Be The Most 'Uneducated' Abroad, New Study Finds

Photo: Getty Could your accent be holding you back when you travel internationally? 7,500 people in the U.S, U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, and Canada were all interviewed about foreign speakers in their county, as well as their own fears when speaking in a foreign language. Americans ranked as the most worried about how their accent is perceived. 54 percent of them said they feel anxious about the accent in a foreign country, while 34 percent said they wish to get rid of their accent when communicating in a different language.
