American citizen Paul Whelan, who was arrested on espionage charges in Russia, is not a secret agent for the United States, a government security source tells PEOPLE.
“He is not our spy,” the security source says of 48-year-old Whelan. “The Russians are just blowing smoke.” The source is not authorized to communicate with the press and spoke to PEOPLE on the condition of anonymity.
News of Whelan’s arrest broke on New Year’s Eve when Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB)announcedthat it had detained the Michigan resident.

An American couple living in Krakow, Poland, with five of their eight children have opened their new home to dozens of refugees forced to leave theirs.
“When you’re staring [at] refugees who have been traveling for many days, and they have nothing but the clothes on their backs, you don’t really make a plan, you just say yes, and I’ll figure it out,” OT told ABC News.

The three American firefighters who died in a plane crash Thursday while helping to battle theAustralian bushfiresin New South Wales have been identified
According to theNew York Times, the late service members included Ian H. McBeth, 44, Paul C. Hudson, 42, and Rick A. DeMorgan Jr., 43.
All three U.S. military veterans worked for the company, according to theTimes.
