Wingate University announced the death of student-athlete Kyle Honore, a freshman, in a post onTwitter.
“Wingate mourns the loss of freshman @WingateMBB student-athlete Kyle Honore,” they wrote. “We send our prayers, love, and support to Kyle’s family, friends, and loved ones.
PEOPLE has reached out to the Wingate Police Department for updates.
The department said emergency personnel tried to save Honore, but he died en route to the hospital,Todayreported.

A 19-year-old college student died on Monday, Jan. 6, at the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Berkshire County, Mass., the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office confirmed with PEOPLE.
Alex Kemp, a Williams College freshman, died after he suffered a fatal skiing accident, the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office said.
The New Jersey native was skiing on the Cutter Trail, labeled the “most difficult” trail for expert skiers, per aJiminy Peak trail map.

Jack Robert Loso, 19, of Robbinsdale, “wasvisiting the Minneopa State Parkwith family members” on Saturday when the incident occurred, according to the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim became “trapped under the earth that had collapsed” during the slide in the Falls area of the park, the sheriff’s office said.

A 19-year-old man was shot and killed during a shooting at the Mall of America just two days before Christmas.
On Friday night, the Bloomington, Minn. Police Department told multiple outlets that officers in the area heard gunshots on the first floor of the Mall of America’s Nordstrom store just before 8 p.m. local time.
The police chief said the shooting happened after an altercation between a group of five to nine people escalated, adding that the shooting itself lasted 30 seconds, multiple outlets reported.
