The Suffolk County Police Department announced Wednesday the arrests of Steven Brown, 44, Jeffrey Mackey, 38, Amanda Wallace, 40, and Alexis Nieves, 33, the department said in a statement to PEOPLE.
The suspects have been charged with hindering prosecution, tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a human corpse, per the statement.
Police responded to a scene last week when a student on her way to school found a “severed left arm” near a park, the department said in an earlier statement to PEOPLE.

At least half a dozen wild elephants were killed after a passenger train collided with them in Sri Lanka, according to local officials.
The Sri Lankan Police announced in aFacebook postthat one of its Meenagaya trains — which had run from the eastern coastal city of Batticaloa to the country’s capital Colombo — had derailed after colliding with eight elephants on Wednesday, Feb. 19.

“Tonight, our worst fears have been confirmed,” Sheriff Vernon Warnke said at theconference that was shared on MCSO’s Facebook page. “We found the four people from the kidnapping, and they are in fact deceased.”
Warnke did not detail how the family was killed, though he said it appears as though they were killed before they were reported missing on Monday. He added that the family of the victims has been notified of their deaths.

A house fire in northern Iowa has left four children dead and another two people injured, according to officials in Mason City.
Crews there responded to a “fully involved house fire” on N. Washington Avenue just after 5 a.m. on Wednesday, the city’s fire department said in a press release sent to PEOPLE.
Firefighters located the four children inside the home after arriving at the scene of the blaze, the department said.

A fire at a two-family home in Somers, Connecticut Tuesday evening killed four children, according to officials.
The blaze occurred at 44 Quality Ave., around 10:20 p.m., Connecticut State Police Trooper First Class Pedro Muniz said during apress conferenceWednesday. He added that multiple victims were rescued, including one adult, but four juveniles were pronounced deceased.
“At this time, it does not appear to be criminal in nature,” Muniz told reporters, adding that authorities are investigating the origin of the fire.
