Staff members at the Birmingham Zoo are mourning the loss of their African lioness Akili.
In a statementon Facebook, the Alabama zoo explained that Akili was “fatally injured on Monday afternoon, July 18th, during introductions to male lion Josh.”
“Animal introductions are always risky because wild animals can be unpredictable and we cannot control their interactions,” Hollie Colahan, the zoo’s deputy director and the coordinator of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP), stated in the social media post.

Award-winning reporter Al Allen has died. He was 79.
FOX affiliate WJBK, where Allen worked for nearly 30 years,announced his deathon Wednesday, Feb. 5, citing a family spokesperson.
Allen died at a Metro Detroit hospital on the night of Tuesday, Feb. 4, WJBK reported.
βFor nearly 30 years, Allen was a fixture on air on FOX 2, reporting on crime and corruption, featuring stories highlighting the best of people in Metro Detroit,β the station said.
