William Hungcertainly never set out to become a viral sensation.
But when he auditioned forAmerican Idolin San Francisco in 2004 during the show’s third season with an off-key rendition ofRicky Martin’s “She Bangs,” that’s exactly what happened to the UC Berkeley engineering student.
“It was all very surprising,” Hung, now 41, tells PEOPLE of becoming a household name after his audition, which aired on Jan.

After getting another chance onAmerican Idol, it’s officially the end of the road forAlyssa Raghu.
On Monday night’sepisodeofAmerican Idol, Raghu — who appeared on the show for a third time this season, after previously making the top 8 in 2019 and top 24 in 2018 — was sent home.
The singer, 22, nearly made it into the top 24 contestants of season 22, but as the judges were split on whether they should give the final spot to her or fellow hopeful Kaibrienne “KB” Richins, the two competed in a sing-off — and Richins ultimately won.
