In a tight-knit Sarasota, Florida, neighborhood where everybody seems to know everything about each other, there are few details known about the disappearance of Jabez Spann, a well-liked athlete and rising football star.
“He played any position you needed him to play,” recalls the boy’s mother, Tawana Spann. “He always carried a football with him.”
On Sept. 4, 2017, police say Jabez was spotted near a street corner memorial for a young man who was killed a week earlier.

Quan Hongchan, a teenage diver from China, had her mother on her mind when she competed at theTokyo Summer Olympics.
On Thursday, Hongchan, 14, performed two perfect dives, winning gold in the women’s 10-meter platform final, according toNPR.
All seven judges gave the athlete perfect 10s during her second and fourth dives in thefive-round competition.
Speaking with reporters after her feat, Hongchan said, through an interpreter, that her win was dedicated to her sick mother.

A 14-year-old cancer patient is going through treatment alone because her mother has not been allowed to cross the border into the United States. But thanks to advocacy groups, the pair may be reunited soon.
Over the summer, Ixcell Perez and her mother Dalia Perez traveled on a bus for four days to the border crossing at Tijuana, Mexico, so Ixcell could undergo treatment in the U.S. after her leukemia relapsed,Good Morning Americareported.

Online records indicate the initial charges filed against Amanda Guthrie on Tuesday — the day her daughter, Ayva, was shot — were upgraded Thursday, after the teen was taken off life support.
According to an online fundraiserlaunched to help defray Ayva’s medical and funeral costs, the girl died Wednesday with family members at her side.
WJXT reportsthat Ayva was a “friendly, sweet” straight-A student who loved playing basketball.
