Johnson identified Philip Cross, who died of a drug overdose in August 2012, as the suspect. Cross was 21 years old and living in Wisconsin at the time of the murder. “After almost 35 years, we found the person that had brutally raped, strangled and bludgeoned Traci Hammerberg to death,” Johnson said.

Jerry Mikkelson willingly left his home in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Aug. 8, 1983, according to theJackson County (Colo.) Sheriff’s Office. Four years later, the 24-year-old’s body was found near the border of Colorado and Wyoming. He was wearing a vest with the initials L.
