Two children were killed and their mother was hospitalized after the family’s two pit bulls attacked them outside their family home in Tennessee, authorities said. Family members said Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, suffered multiple injuries when she tried to pull the dogs off her 5-month-old son Hollace Dean and 2-year-old daughter Lilly Jane, who were killed in the attack. “She put her body on top of Lilly’s to try and protect her after the attack started,” Bennard’s husband’s uncle, Jeff Gibson, toldUSA Today.

Police and firefighters were dispatched to Bliss Park Playground early Sunday morning after a Massachusetts mother reported “burn-like injuries” on her children after going down the slide,according to a statementfrom the Longmeadow Fire Department. The initial investigation determined that someone broke into the pump room in the basement of the park pool where the chemicals used to operate the pool are stored, according to authorities.

Louisiana authorities are investigating the deaths of two children and one women at a family home in an incident that sent another woman and child to the hospital. On Wednesday morning, police received a call requesting medical assistance inside a Terrytown home, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde said at a press conference. Rivarde declined to comment on the causes of death, citing an ongoing investigation and pending autopsy.

The two children were run over and died at the scene, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. “Preliminary investigation indicates a John Deere backhoe was traveling southwest on Chapel Hill Court with multiple children and adults riding on various moving parts of the backhoe,” according to the department of safety.
