2 Small Planes Collide in Mid-Air in Canada, Killing 1 Person

Two small planes collided in mid-air in Ottawa, Canada, at 10 a.m. local time on Sunday, killing one person. A spokesman for Ottawa paramedics, Marc-Antoine Deschamps, said thatone person was found deadat the scene of the crash. The victim was an 82-year-old recreational pilot, according to radio stationNewstalk 1010. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the second plane sustained just minor damage. Police still have not confirmed how many people were on board the two crafts, or what caused the collision.

The second victim wasn’t wearing a transceiver and wasn’t located until the following day after search and rescue had to suspend efforts Saturday due to “weather and safety concerns,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators said that as the ferry was making its way to the mainland, its operator reported that the Mercedes had fallen overboard, police said. Divers from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Miami-Dade Police Department started searching for the car in the waters below and found it submerged near Government Cut, a manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island.
