A U.S. Army soldier stationed in Alaska is recovering from life-threatening injuries he received this weekend when a bear landed on top of him after it was shot along a hilltop, PEOPLE confirms.
William McCormick, 28, was with fellow soldier Zachary Tennyson, 19, when the men opened fire on a bear standing along a ridge near Carter Lake in the Chugach National Forest, state officials detailed in theirdaily dispatchon September 29.

A man visiting theGrand Canyon Skywalkhas died after apparently leaping hundreds of feet to his death, Grand Canyon West spokesman David Leibowitz confirms to PEOPLE.
The man has not been identified.
The Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge, is a popular tourist destination that extends 70 feet out of the rim of the Grand Canyon, according to its website.

A day at an Indiana lake took a devastating turn for one 28-year-old man after authorities say he drowned while saving his girlfriend.
Officials said the incident unfolded on Sunday around 4:30 p.m. at Washington Park beach in Michigan City, which is located approximately 170 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
Turner was swimming in Lake Michigan with his girlfriend — whose identity has not been released — when she began to struggle in the water, according to the Indiana DNR.

Bryan Kohberger was arrested in Pennsylvania on Friday in connection with the killings of Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21,ABC News, theAssociated PressandFox Newsreports.

Subhradeep Dutta, of the Minneapolis suburb Edina, was visiting the popular national park outside San Francisco on Tuesday and was walking along the trail path when the massive tree fell down, according to areleasefrom the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
Dutta was with his sister, who was hospitalized, and her boyfriend, who escaped without injury, National Park Service spokesman Charles Strickfaden toldKPIX.
Sister Swagata Dutta said Subhradeep was visiting her in the Bay Area for the holidays, and that the group heard the sound of rocks falling just seconds before disaster struck.
