37 Years After Her Murder, Authorities Identify a Calif. Woman Slain in 1986

Photo:San Diego County Sheriff’s Department San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Investigators in San Diego have made a major breakthrough in a decades-old cold case after positively identifying a woman’s remains, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department announced. Through DNA testing and Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG), investigators were able to identify a dead body found near campsites on Los Coyotes Indian Reservation in Warner Spring as missing woman Claudette Jean Zebolsky Powers, the department said in a news release.

In an indictment unsealed Friday, James Krauseneck Jr. is accused of second-degree murder in connection to the grisly 1982 slaying of his 29-year-old wife Cathleen in the family’s Brighton home. Krauseneck, 67, has pleaded not guilty and is free on $100,000 bail. Krauseneck’s attorneys said he has cooperated with the investigation, “repeatedly giving statements to the police, consenting to the search of his home and his car,” the lawyers said.
