Two children were killed in separate incidents involving fallen trees as amajor winter stormswept through the Southern U.S.
Around 5:40 a.m. on Monday in Decatur, Georgia, fire crews told NBC affiliateWXIAthat a 5-year-old boy was killed when a tree smashed into his home. Family members identified the boy as Zachariah Jackson.
A fire spokesperson told Fox affiliateWAGAthat when crews arrived, they found a downed tree in the middle of the home and heard the boy’s mother screaming.

A Georgia boy has been made an honorary firefighter after helping save his family from a house fire.
Noah Woods, 5, recently rescued his little sister and the family dog from a blaze that tore through their home, theBartow County Fire Departmentshared on a Facebook post on Tuesday.
The young boy was asleep in the bedroom he shared with his 2-year-old sister when he awoke to smoke and flames, according to fire officials.

A 37-year-old Washington man has been accused of second-degree murder in the death last week of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter, PEOPLE confirms.
Officers were called to an apartment building in Vancouver on Friday afternoon, after receiving reports about an unconscious girl, identified as Hartley Anderson.
The girl’s accused killer, Ryan Burge, is additionally charged with first-degree assault of a child. He will be asked to enter his plea when he appears in court later Monday afternoon.
